Star of the North SDT Handler Information

2018 Star of the North SDT

This will be the 13th year of the trial which started as a crazy idea in 2006, not quite 2 years after I started running my first Border Collie Riel in sheepdog trials.

The judge is T.B.D.

The plan is to run 3 Open trials, 2 ProNovice, 2 Nursery, and 2 Novice/Ranch classes. This is subject to entries of course and the following schedule is tentative and subject to change without notice to accomodate changes in entries. Tentantive schedule is as follows

Friday Oct 5th, 7:00AM Open 1, followed by Nursery 1 and PN 1

Saturday October 6th 7:00AM , Nursery 2, ProNovice 2, Open 2

Sunday October 7th, 7:30AM, Novice/Ranch 1, Novice/Ranch 2, Open 3

Novice and Ranch differ in that Ranch is essentially a small ProNovice course with a shorter outrun and drive for handlers who are thinking of making the movice from Novice to ProNovice. It has a full drive (but 50 yards or less per leg) and the handler remains at the post. Novice has a wear instead of a drive.

Handler Information - Getting there

From the east, follow I94W through Minneapolis. Take the I394W exit and proceed west on I394 which turns into US12 just past the I494 exit. Take the Co Rd 15 West exit which is also called Shoreline Drive, and follow it around Lake Minnetonka to Mound. Stay on Co. Rd 15 past the intersection with Co Rd 110W (Commercial Blvd) for another 2 miles. The entrance is on your left just past the "Voyageurs Environmental Center" (on the right). There should be a sign directing you on the road opposite the entrance.

From the west, take US12 to Co. Rd 92 west of Independence. Follow Co. Rd 92 south until it intersects with Co. Rd 15. Turn left onto Co. Rd 15 and the entrance will be on your right about 1.5 miles east on Co. Rd 15.

From the south, take I35W north to I494. Take I494 west to US212/MN5. Take US212/MN5 west to Rolling Acres Rd (9 miles). Turn right on to Rolling Acres Rd for 1.1 miles then left on to MN-7W for 1.7mi. Turn right on to Co. Rd. 44 for 3.6mi then left onto Co. Rd. 15. The entrance is on your right after about 1 mi.

When you enter the park, the road makes a very sharp left and continues up a steep hill to the trial field. If you are hauling a camper, or if it is wet, you may want to continue right along the valley bottom until the entrance road meets the main farm road. Take a left there, go up the hill. The trial field is on your left. Day parking is on your right. Continue on around past the ProNovice setout to the camping area to the right (east) of the trial field. Please do not drive on to the trial field and please do not park on the running track (between the road and the trial field).
